Based on the anime-inspired set of collectible figures of female DC characters, Ame-Comi Girls volume 1 focuses on Batgirl (Barbara Gordon) and Robin (Carrie Kelly, in this universe she’s Babs’ cousin) as they face off against Gotham sirens Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and Duela Dent (a new character who is the daughter of Gamblin’ Jack the Joker Dent and who dresses in Steampunk joker-esque garb). Duela is hatching a major scheme to take down Gotham and intends to capture our heroes. Meanwhile, Wonder Woman, new ambassador to the world outside of Themyscira, must find the balance between Human and Amazon. Then Steel, Power Girl, and The Flash have to save Supergirl (and the world) from Brainiac! Ame-Comi Girls is written by Jimmy Palmiotti, who also writes the Harley Quinn on-going series, and Justin Gray, best known for All-Star Western and Jonah Hex. You definitely get the same irreverent Harley Quinn vibe from this series. The characters are young(er), female versions of the usual suspects and the series is all about the writers having fun writing this. Even though all (or most) of the characters are women, it’s not the “strong female character” romp wrapped in anime cosplay I was anticipating. Still, if you’re into extreme fashion and DC characters, you will enjoy this peek into the anime multiverse. PLUS it will give you some nice cosplay ideas for your next convention! :D Fun Fact: The name Ame-Comi comes from shortening American Comics. Check it out at your local library!
