Rat Queens: Volume one, Sass and Sorcery

rat queens vol1Do you like action? Do you like monsters? Do you like kick-ass women fighting monsters? Then this is the book for you!

This ongoing comic series from Image blends action and humor to create a fantastical adventure. A rag-tag band of warriors are sent on a seemingly mundane task when they are set upon by a fearsome assassin and ambushed by trolls. They make their way back to town only to discover the other mercenaries from their town were also targeted. Now they must unravel this conspiracy to discover who wants them all dead and why.

Kurtis Wiebe does a good job writing believeable, diverse, and strong female characters. Roc Upchurch’s art is clean and fun. I especially enjoyed the little extras like how the “continued in the next issue” blurb was written as if the characters were in a game of D&D. The language used seems rather modern even though the setting is “medieval”, but it doesn’t take away from the story. I’m looking forward to the next installment in trade, but if you can’t wait you can pick up the next issues from your local comic book shop (volume 1 includes issues 1-5). This is definitely a story I will continue to enjoy.

It was announced in June that the series has been picked up by Pukeko Pictures to be adapted into an animated TV series. No news yet on exactly when we will see our darlings on the “medium screen”. In the meantime, check out Rat Queens volume 1 available from your local library.
